MS vs OS

I will discuss how Organic solidarity differs from Mechanical solidarity.

  1. Mechanical solidarity (MS) is a sense of unity and togetherness based on people’s likenesses in society. The similarities people find among each other draws them together, this is why we seek our friends (pg. 17) they share traits that draw us together and form a unity. Because society is so tightly knit, if anyone were to deviate away from their bonds they would become socially weak (pg. 25) and possibly violate the collective consciousness (CC), strong beliefs shared by members of a society (pg. 39). These beliefs are so strong that laws are made, repressive laws, to punish the criminals who deviate from those beliefs. In punishing the criminal, their sentencing is done publicly to both shame them on a broad social spectrum and repair the CC and giving closure by showing the honest people that the crime was dealt with.
Organic solidarity (OS) is the idea that people are unified through their differences. Everyone possesses skills that are different from but complement another person’s skills, which is why under OS people are more individualistic. (pg. 149) People become more interdependent on each other, similar to how the division of labor requires people to work interdependently to increase productivity. Since people are interdependent, there is less chance of someone deviating from the social order because their deviation would result in a disturbance in the division of labor in society which would negatively affect everyone, including the criminal. Because of this there is less need for such punishing laws. The laws that exist under this form of solidarity are restitutive and aren’t put in place to punish the criminal but rather to restore the damages done by them. (pg. 68)
